To update/redownload iMovie 10, drag your iMovie 10 app from the Applications folder into the trash, but do not empty the trash. (You can skip that step if you had iMovie 10 on your computer before, but deleted it.) Sign in to the app store and open your purchases folder by clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar. ( You will see your purchases displayed, including iMovie 10. Redownload/update iMovie from there. If not successful, drag your present iMovie app out of the trash (if you moved it there) and return it to the Applications folder.

If iMovie isn't in your purchase history, there may be a little trick you can use, if you can just get temporary access to a newer Mac with the new macOS. Log into the App Store with your Apple ID and "purchase" iMovie there. Now back to your old Mac to check your purchase history, and you can download the older version of iMovie for your old Mac. If you can't access another Mac, you could also try Virtual Machines (installed another macOS with the help of Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox) to install a copy of macOS to buy the iMovie app, then download the older version of iMovie from the App Store on your Mac.
App Store for Mac is the right place to download iMovie. However, it doesn't work sometimes. If so, you would need to visit somewhere on the internet to download an old version of iMovie. Well-know websites are preferred. But these sites are unauthorized by Apple, so be careful because the downloaded files might carry malware. Don't forget to turn on your firewall and malware fighter. This tip did not work for me running 10.12.6. I did download QT7.6.6 but it will not open and stay open. It quits in 1 second. I have the pro keys and am considering downgrading to a previous OS version just to have QT 7 Pro back. What was the last version of Mac OS that allowed QT7 to open. Sierra DOES NOT. Thanks
